Dave and I are so lucky to have a little girl in our family. After the two boys, anything princess, ruffles or tutu-related is such a fun change that we can't say no. Our little Ayla was turning 3 this fall and of course she asked for a Frozen birthday party. Full discloser: I got carried away with this one, but it was so much fun! She only named 4 friends that she wanted to invite so we decided to have this party at the house.
We started with a snowflake project about 2 weeks before the party that really turned out to be much more effort than I was expecting! I thought we'd make between 5 and 7 snowflakes for a few decorations but then my friend and her family offered to help me make them and we ended up making about 25 snowflakes out of popsicle sticks with a glue gun. They came together pretty quickly once we got the hang of it and through trial and error we can confirm a glue gun is the way to go here versus crazy glue for example. This was such a fun activity as each snowflake came out slightly different like a real snowflake!
Once we had the snowflakes assembled, Dave helped me paint them with spray paint by stringing them across some fishing line tied between two trees in our yard. We covered an old kid's swimming pool with a cut open garbage bag and dumped about 1/3 of the glitter container into the pool. After the snowflakes were painted on both sides, we sprayed both sides with spray adhesive and "dipped" the snowflakes in the glitter pile. It took a bit of jostling of each snowflake to get it fully covered in the glitter. We sprayed and dipped each side of the snowflakes then left them to dry in the sun for a few hours. They were already sparkling!
I also made the goodie bags ahead of the party. Ayla's birthday is in September, just ahead of the holidays so we gave out both snowflake and snowman cookie cutters that we ordered from Bakeco. We were able to find these snowflake goodie bags on Amazon that were just perfect. We also knew Elsa was going to be making an appearance at our home and Ayla was going to have a coronation of her own so not wanting any little princess to feel left out, we ordered little tiaras for everyone as well.
Michael's had the perfect selection of both sparkly paper and snowflake paper punches to create a bunch of snowflake cutouts that we used throughout the party. We were able to order an Olaf pinata and along with the candy, we put a bunch of smaller white paper snowflake punch outs in it so when he was hit, snowflakes came out of him along with the candy. We used the large sparkly snowflake cutouts on the "dinner" table and around the gift table as well. The morning of the party Dave hung all the snowflakes with clear fishing line sporadically around our living room and dramatically low on the dinner table where our princesses would have their pizza. We did a very simple ice cream buffet for dessert and were able to find these themed sprinkles as an add-on.
I ordered two sets of balloons/decorations and ended up combining them. A mistake I made was leaving the balloon arch creation to the day of. This was the scene about 3 hours before guests were expected, such a stress bomb:
It all came together nicely but it turns out these balloon arches last for more than a week so there was NO reason not to do this this at least the night before! Lesson learned...It was super fun seeing it all come together and even our wall mounted deer Hank got in on the tiara action. Turns out all the men in our house get soft when it comes to our princess Ayla :). Of course Ayla has accumulated multiple Frozen dolls and tiaras/wands so we added them in to the decorations.
The final fun thing we did was load up our drink dispenser with blue Gatorade and drop in some dry ice we picked up from a local bait shop. This is a fun and easy add on to any party if you can source some dry ice near you. We often do this at Halloween as well with purple Kool-Aid. The kids love it!!
Essie and Sally Hansen have come out with super quick dry nail polish lines that conveniently have appropriate Frozen appropriate colors/sparkles. In addition to donning shiny tiaras, our guest princesses were treated to a quick manicure so they felt as royal as Elsa herself. It was a perfectly magical day...we had snow much fun!
